Mankind bitten by a Brown Recluse
Poison injected
From a web secluded
Victims scream in tortured horror
As beauty rots before their eyes.

A poem in Shock

The arm of our lady laid down
and in a deep breath ,
that is enough.
blew her flame out.
sink the crown

walked across the river
to the island.
couldn't be more simple

walk over the dust cloud
never seen so many shoes
hanging over the phone lines

excuse me ...

many hard hats looked up and
wanted to speak out but

too many words got
stuck in the throat

grab the enterance wall right
from the fresh ground

I 'll wear this as my crown

gotta go back
got a long way to go back
yes,go back,
couldn't be more simple.

when my innocence was peeled away and burned
when my sense of security jumped out the window
i was barely awake
before i realized a new era dawned
of psyche riven
of time no longer for granted

i want to sing not argue with my friends
and i want the taste of burning metal gone.

I want to argue
because I feel
too sick to.
That metal taste is gone,
mopped away and drained
in golden grates and barricades
with song
and hope.

tips my tongue
my tongue that is loose

words that cannot stop

TV screen filled with fire, smoke and dust.
I turn away but, look I must.
Buildings exploding, sounds to loud to hear.
Now is the time for action,
and over coming fear.

(And there was a Turkish girl who'd been sick at school.
Anthrax! said the doctor and the papers. Terror! Here!
But no.
Business there is bad, the family hadn't had enough to eat.)

View from Jersey City

Particles of the dead
mix with rising smoke, and in the rubble
of the fallen towers there is no scrap
of the pride that raised them.

The bronze lady stands
in a different time and in
a different light, apart
from dust and ashes.

The drive that raised Manhattan
to the sky raised Manhattan out of sight
—beyond the lady’s light.
She throws no shadowed bulk
on earth and doesn’t scrape or hurt
the sky.

No currency of blood buys back
the dead or ends the sudden silence
of oblivion. New blood shed for old
does not pay down the debt. The trap
of vengeance closes on the hand
that sets it.

Disparate islands of one humanity
cling to private wounds—ignorant
of the larger pain that claims us all.

Note: This was written after seeing a photograph on the Internet. It was a view
of the Manhattan skyline taken from Jersey City after the collapse of the
World Trade Center towers. The skyscrapers that remained standing were obscured in a dense cloud of smoke, but in the foreground the Statue of Liberty (the bronze lady) was caught in an oblique shaft of light.

sexual apocalypse blues

gonna wage holy war against you baby
my prick is so jihad!—
is a bomb
within himself
& he’s aroused
for war--invades
your deepest cave
detonates and dies
with you--O clouds
of kingdom
come

there's the eternal flame and stench
posters of the missing
cross hatched
with footprints
of ash and soil
yellowed reams from extinguished companies still floating onto the streets
of Staten Island
And shhhhhh
when it's silent
you can hear
the twisted bedrock groaning
Ohming praying and healing
beneath the island of Manhattan
The two towers on the horizon
like wicks of two candles forever
burning out
Imprints of light on the eyelids
phantom limbs skybound

Injury to one is injury to all.
My peace locked inside your peace.

What stood tall
Now breathes ash
My peace lies beside your peace.
Inside landed mines their peace separates-
It could've been a toy.
Resembled butterflies free in the sun.

You intrinsically bound by curiousity.
now arms reach invisibly
And end in stumps.
No trade could compensate
For mutilated babies.
In NYC, Kabul, Jerusalem
For this we pay in children.

until this crisis ends
we will still need the warm smiles of our younger
and the wisdom of our elder
this crisis burns through our everyday like it was born with us
these words will not end it
it will end itself
then will start a new
crisis

From far away,
we sit and stare at television screens
crying for those we don't know
but some how seem to love
From far away
we sit and watch fingers being pointed
hear voices enraged
From far away
We feel so close
Who is to blame for this crime
Who will pay
Revenge
It's the American way

Show off our scars
pull the shirt back down
we're human, we can bleed
call off your witch trial
we're bleeding, we're alive
tie a string on my finger
to remember to be kind
stained
by
the waste of life
no one
will admit to apology.

If all of us feel such greif.
Then why do we not all speak.
not with words but cherished thoughts,
that come straight from our souls.
feelings that bring laughter, and looks that are quite bold. I ask you all to awncer me ,
not with words with a heart felt plee. All the world awncer me.

Don't look down from the flowers and the birds. They will catch up with us. A steady wind, a tender kiss, luckless bodies, all ashes and dirt. I've lost my desire to keep the peace. I'm the dreamer, all dried up by the time.

For Chris Hanley, Friend, Advisor, Missing:

I keep wondering, what am I supposed to do?
I existed, until two days ago, with purpose
That now exists as tissue in the rain.

My resolve disolves and forms
Little slimey lumps that are thrown away.
Tossed into a trash can , which I could
Shake like a giant King Kong.

I wish I were a large gorilla,
Able to swat planes out of the sky,
Then perhaps I could dream about
Bananas again, and days in the sun.
